John Newton stated, "Although my memory's fading, I remember 2 things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior." AMEN! Oh that is so true. And those of us who have the privilege to be called "Christians" should allow that thought to become so deeply ingrained into our minds and hearts, that even if we lose our memory or "lose our minds" we will still remember our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I don't know if you have ever been to an assisted living facility or a home where the elderly live and are cared for but I have and I observed something very interesting in the lives of many of the patients. And I even observed this in the life of my mother who lived for 12 years with Alzheimer's. They might not have known where they were or who it was that was visiting them such as a family member of friend but start singing some of the old classic hymns and their faces would light up and they would either hum the tune or even sing along in some cases. It goes to show us that there are just some things in life we never forget.
They never forgot their Savior or the words of hymns that praised him for his love and saving grace such as The Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace, What A Friend We Have In Jesus, It Is Well With My Soul, Blessed Assurance, When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder, At Calvary and so many others It goes to show us that there are just some things in life we never forget.
AND...
If it ever happens that I totally lose my mind, ( and no jokes please because I know some of you reading this are probably thinking..."if he loses his mind, he lost that a long time ago"-LOL!), I hope that I too will remember those two things: that I am a great sinner who has been saved by a great Savior. And although because of my infirmity I may not remember much about this world and the people in it...I so want to remember my Savior and the joy that awaits me...and you...when we finally reach our eternal home with our Savior.
