Students will soon be heading back to school. For many students it is a time of excitement and anticipation. This time of the year means new schools, classes, teachers and catching up with friends after the summer holidays.
But for millions of young people, going back to school can mean feelings of anxiety and fear for bullying may have been part of their school experience.
Research has shown that bullying occurs in school playgrounds every 7 minutes and once every 25 minutes in class (Pepler et al., 1997). 160,000 children skip school each day in the United States because of intimidation bytheir peers. (U.S. National Education Association)
How do schools deal with bullying? Some do it effectively, but many do not handle it well and some schools can even make the problem worse.
With this in mind, Bullying.org, creator and facilitator of http://www.bullying.org, the world's most visited and referenced Website about bullying, and the annual Bullying Awareness Week, http://www.bullyingawarene ssweek.org, has created a report card that parents can use to evaluate whether their child's school is up to the task.
The Report Card, or checklist asks important questions such as:
- Is your school's administration committed to addressing bullying?
- Did educators at the school have courses about bullying during their teacher training in University? (Many educators have never had such training)
- Have the educators at your school had a professional development course about bullying since they graduated from teacher training in University?
-Does the school have a policy about bullying? (Policies often focus on what school will do if and when bullying occurs)
-Does the school's policy primarily focus on punishment? (Often referred to as "Zero Tolerance")
The complete checklist for parents can down found at http://www.bullyingcourse.com.
